Matthew Chapter 2:
After Jesus is born in Bethlehem, wise men (Magi) from the East come to Jerusalem, following a star, seeking the “king of the Jews.” King Herod hears about this and feels threatened. He asks the Magi to find the child and report back, pretending he wants to worship him too. The star leads the Magi to Jesus, where they present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they go home by another route.
Joseph is also warned in a dream to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus to escape Herod’s plan to kill the child. They stay there until Herod dies. Meanwhile, Herod, furious that the Magi didn’t report back, orders the massacre of all boys aged two and under in Bethlehem.
After Herod’s death, Joseph is again guided in a dream to return to Israel. Fearing Herod’s son Archelaus, they settle in the region of Galilee, in a town called Nazareth, fulfilling what the prophets had said about the Messiah being called a Nazarene.
