Worship that Restores
Let me ask you a question: Is your worship dependent on your circumstances or on the One you’re worshipping?
Being back in this room at Samford University today reminded me of one of my darkest moments—and greatest victories. Decades ago, faculty sat me here and told me to give up music ministry. After vocal surgery, they said I’d never sing again.
I remember crying on a hillside, asking, “God, why take the very thing I use to serve you?”
His response changed my life: “Dwayne, if I take your voice, will you stop worshipping me?” In that moment of surrender, I gave Him my voice. Slowly, He restored it. Two years later, I sang my senior recital in this same room and went on to sing 250+ dates a year for His glory.
I first shared this story in my book, Pure Praise, and standing here with worship students today reminded me that God is always bigger than a professional opinion. As I heard those students gather around a piano and lift up passionate worship, I cried again. But these tears were tears of thankfulness for his great faithfulness.
So, what are you afraid to surrender today? Trust Him. He is the God of restoration. I can testify!

1. Great is thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.
Refrain:
Great is thy faithfulness,
Great is thy faithfulness,
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed thy hand hast provided;
Great is thy faithfulness,
Lord unto me.
2. Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. [Refrain]
3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine and ten thousand beside. [Refrain]2 -
This is the hymn which comforted me in a deep valley

Thank you, Heiko. Reading this hymn and remembering His faithfulness over the years brings me to the point of tears again. “All my life You have been faithful.”
