Matthew Chapter 17 Summary:
1. The Transfiguration (verses 1–8):
Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain where He is transfigured before them — His face shines like the sun and His clothes become dazzling white. Moses and Elijah appear, talking with Jesus. A bright cloud covers them, and God’s voice says:
“This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”
The disciples fall face down in awe, and Jesus comforts them.2. Coming Down the Mountain (verses 9–13):
Jesus tells the disciples not to share what they saw until after His resurrection. They ask about Elijah, and Jesus explains that John the Baptist came in the spirit of Elijah, but was rejected and killed.3. Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy (verses 14–21):
A man begs Jesus to heal his son, whom the disciples couldn’t help. Jesus rebukes the demon, and the boy is healed instantly. When the disciples ask why they couldn’t cast it out, Jesus says,
“Because you have so little faith.”
He teaches them that with faith as small as a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible.4. Jesus Predicts His Death (verses 22–23):
Jesus again tells His disciples that He will be betrayed, killed, and raised to life on the third day. The disciples are filled with grief.5. Paying the Temple Tax (verses 24–27):
When asked if Jesus pays the temple tax, Peter says yes. Jesus explains that, as the Son, He is exempt — but to avoid offense, He tells Peter to catch a fish, and in its mouth, Peter will find a coin to pay the tax for both of them — and he does!Themes in Matthew 17:
